Any son of super star stallion Dubawi has to be looked at closely. Statistically, Dubawi is the most successful sire to ever stand in Great Britain, with 269 stakes-winners, 177 at Group level. What turned our head at Woodside was Benbatl’s physical. He looks very much like his sire; 15.3 hands, muscular, a deep girth, and the list goes on.
On the racetrack, Benbatl was a high class miler who was able to stretch his ability to 2000-metres, and was crowned Champion Miler in both Great Britain and Europe in 2019, earning of over AUD$10 million. In total, Benbatl won 10 Group races, three at the elite Group 1 level.
Benbatl was an incredibly tough athlete. He would sit on the pace and even lead if necessary, and was able to run rivals into the ground with a scintillating turn of speed.
He was a star from day one, winning on debut by seven lengths at Doncaster, before going on to win the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot.
His first Group 1 came in The Dubai Turf, comfortably defeating Japanese Group 1 performed horses Vivlos, Real Steel and Deirdre. The racecaller said “This is a rising star, he bolts in”, and just two starts later, the star came to the fore, winning his second Group 1, this time in Germany, winning by three-lengths.
A renowned Group 1-winning globetrotter, Benbatl’s Australian campaign was brief, but successful. He took out the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes in 2.00.84 (less than half a second outside the track record) beating Group 1 winners Blair House and Humidor.
Just two-weeks later, Benbatl tested legendary mare Winx, running an almighty second in what was her fourth-straight Cox Plate.
s measure of how tough he was – in preparation for the US$20 million Saudi Cup, he had one race-start on the dirt. Going from turf to racing top tier dirt horses is no easy feat, yet Benbatl proved superior in the Al Maktoum Challenge at Group 2 level. Then in the Saudi Cup against all the best American dirt superstars, he ran an incredibly brave third.
Benbatl was a dual Group 2 Joel Stakes winner, defeating Group 1 thoroughbreds King Of Comedy and Zaaki in the former. As the racecaller put it, “beats them pointless”.
His second Joel Stakes win was to be his second last start, going 1.34.56 in track record time. Champion jockey Oisin Murphy, a self-confessed Benbatl fan said after the race, “He is a great horse to look at. A horse of a lifetime. Very special.”
On his pedigree, he is out of outstanding mare, Nahrain, who won Group 1 races in both France and the USA. Her dam, Bahr, was also above average winning Group races at Royal Ascot and York. In many ways, it is a homecoming for this pedigree. Benbatl’s fourth dam is the mighty mare La Mer who was a six-time Group 1 winner in New Zealand.
We have seen the Dubawi sire-line stand out across the world in the last 12-months, and we are extremely confident that Benbatl will only add credit to this line.
