An extremely talented, Group 1-winning son of Champion Sire Fastnet Rock, Foxwedge, the Champion Second Season Sire of his year, relocated to Victoria in 2019 and his progeny have continued to go from strength from strength. On arrival in Victoria he had 11 stakes winners and now that tally sits at 26.
As a $925,000 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale graduate, with both the looks and pedigree, Foxwedge was the third highest priced colt purchased from the sale.
Foxwedge rose to prominence as a two-year-old, starting as a leading chance in the Golden Slipper on the back of a win in the Lonhro Plate and placing in the Todman Stakes.
As a three-year-old, Foxwedge went from strength to strength, claiming the San Domenico Stakes and Roman Consul Stakes in the spring of 2011, before placing second to champion racehorse Sepoy in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, beaten in fighting photo finish.
Foxwedge went on as an autumn three-year-old to finish less than four-lengths behind legendary sprinter Black Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes, before placing in a Newmarket Handicap and defeating the likes of champion sprinters Hay List and Buffering in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes.
A breeder’s favourite at Woodside, Foxwedge is the sire of 26 individual stakes winners and five Group 1 winners, including Queen Of The Turf winner Foxplay, Railway Stakes winner Volpe Veloce and Australian Guineas winner Lunar Fox.
The key to the success of any stallion is the number of stakes performers they can produce, and with 26 stakes winners including five individual Group 1 winners, Foxwedge continues to prove himself as a reliable stallion in Australia.
Highlighting his significant appeal, Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes winner Urban Fox is from Foxwedge’s first northern hemisphere crop, while locally, Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Foxplay as well as Group 1 Railway Stakes winner Volpe Veloce are both from the first southern hemisphere crop.
Australian-bred, but South Africa trained, the aptly named Run Fox Run was successful in the Group 1 Cape Flying Championships in 2021 where the five-year-OLD mare defeated many of South Africa’s best Group 1 sprinters to highlight herself as the leading female sprinter in the country.
Becoming his fifth individual Group 1 winner, Lunar Fox won the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes at two before capturing the Group 1 Australian Guineas at 3, defeating multiple Group 1 winners.
With progeny earnings in excess of $55 million, Foxwedge’s appeal is now extended to fillies and mares, highlighting their broodmare appeal.
Group 1 winner Volpe Veloce sold for $1.9m at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale while fellow Foxwedge mares Noire ($800,000), Play For Time ($725,000), Into The Abyss ($700,000), Catwalk ($600,000) have all have broodmare appeal.
Foxwedge has proven successful with many broodmare sire lines from daughters of Shamardal, Lonhro, Starcraft, Woodman, Malibu Moon, General Nediym, Danehill Dancer and Red Ransom.
Foxwedge’s favourite cross has proven to be from Sadler’s Wells line mares. Both Foxplay and Volpe Veloce are out of mares by sons of Sadler’s Wells.
One of more than twenty sons at stud in Australia by his Champion Sire, as listed by the Australian Stud Book, Foxwedge is the ONLY active stallion to have produced five individual Group 1 winners.
