Written By to follow in the footsteps of his Champion Sire

Trainer Grahame Begg’s Written By looks to have a very bright future indeed by following in the footsteps of his sire, Woodside Park Stud’s Champion Stallion Written Tycoon after winning the $100,000, 1000 metre opener at Sandown’s Ladbrokes Park.

Beginning his racing career in the same fashion, impressively winning on debut, Written Tycoon went on to claim the Group 2 Todman Stakes, two starts later.

"He was a great horse Written Tycoon, and was probably one of the most natural horses I've ever trained as far as ability goes," Begg said.

"This colt is similar, a typical roll-forward horse, a natural athlete. He has got good gate speed, and he wants to be a racehorse.”

Written By, continues Written Tycoons proven ability to sire exceptional two-year-olds, and may very well be the next remarkable juvenile come Autumn.

Claiming the deserved title of Champion Two-Year-Old Sire in Australia in 2015/16, Written Tycoon produced the duet of two-year-old Group One gallopers including Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and NZ Sires Produce Luna Rossa, along with the unbeaten, Group 2 winning two-year-old, Winning Rupert.

Although tempted to head to Sydney for the $500,000 Inglis Nursery in two weeks, Graham Begg has decided to finish on a high note.

“He has been in work since the middle of July, so he has done a brilliant job of getting through to December.  Luckily he is a terrific little doer, full marks to him.”

“He is in the paddock now, and we will focus on his education and getting him right to contest some nice two-year-old races in the autumn," Begg said.

Excited about the possibility of repeating history, the win was also personally rewarding, with his father, Neville Begg. Not only did Begg Senior breed the promising colt, but he has also remained in the ownership.

“My dad, now 86 years young, was just delighted to see his colt score and it was great to be a beneficiary of the generous $35,000 in Super VOBIS bonuses.”

Out of the winning Tobougg mare Yau Chin, he stems from the family of Kaoru Star mare No Finer, a sister to the top-class racehorses Marceau, Zasu and Joy Love and the dam of four stakes winners including the Group 1 Australian Guineas and top-class sire Pins and the Group II Shannon Stakes winner Nips.

“The mare has stayed in NSW to breed this year, but next year, I would be thinking she will be coming back to Victoria and going to Written Tycoon!,” Begg said.

Written Tycoon will be very well represented by an outstanding group of yearlings being presented for sale at next year’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.

With 27 promising youngsters catalogued for sale, with seven being offered from Woodside Park Stud, it will be an opportunity for the astute buying bench to tap into proven mares, having already produced Group, listed and numerous city winners.

A few of the standout Written Tycoon yearlings on offer include a full brother to the Group 3 winner Vibrant Rouge, a full brother to Group 2 winner Booker, and a half sister to the Group 3 winner Take Pride.

And when the quality pedigrees are complimented with brilliant types, there will no doubt be strong competition for the next generation of Written Tycoon two-year-old flyers.
