Zoustar’s day of firsts!
Yesterday was not only a birthday celebration for all our thoroughbreds; it was a day of firsts with success already recorded for Woodside Park Stud’s young gun, Zoustar.
On the first day of the 2017/2018 racing season, a talented New Zealand two-year-old filly called Quattro Katie hit the ground running to take out her trial at Whakatane Racing Club at Te Teko.
The promising chestnut filly was Zoustar’s FIRST trial winner from his FIRST youngster to trial, in the FIRST official two-year-old trial held in Australia and New Zealand.
A day of firsts indeed!
Prepared by Matamata co-trainers Jamie Richards and Stephen Autridge they were very pleased with how she handled the official trial over 620m.
“She has done everything right from the get go,” said Richards. “She is a strong precocious type, has good hind quarters, and she wants to be a racehorse.”
Richards headed over to the Gold Coast Magic Millions this January with a forward, early running yearling in mind, and they certainly got that.
“We wanted an advanced type, one that would get up and run. As soon as we saw her, she just stood out, and it was a bonus that she was by the exciting stallion Zoustar.”
Quattro Katie has pulled up well after her impressive debut trial this morning and has earned a break in the paddock for two-three weeks to further develop and grow.
As she has already shown her ability to gallop, Richards will aim Quattro Katie at the two-year-old races leading up to the festive season.
“We have no plans to rush her, but she is sound and fit, so we will target a couple of races later this year with the ultimate dream to return to Queensland for the Magic Millions two-year-old race during the January carnival,” Richards said.
Quattro Katie was purchased by Te Akau Stud’s principal David Ellis for $150,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. From the Zedative mare, Kakakakatie, a proven galloper herself with dual AJC stakes wins over 1200m, from the family of Group 1 winners, Bonanova, Fraternity and Telesto.
Being first out of the barriers, Zoustar is the short priced favourite to be Champion First Season Sire next year, with William Hill giving him odds of $2.25 ahead of Epaulette and Sizzling.
With many more exciting youngsters ready to trial in the coming months, there is no doubt that Quattro Katie will be the first of many for Woodside Park Stud’s Zoustar.
